A few words about liberal perspectives in the European Union
-------
-----State and legislation is growing up in Europe . An important question is: are individual rights are promoted in European Union? Unfortunately we don't think. The last constitutional treaty is typically non liberal for many facts. One of these is the charts for fundamentals rights. This chart is full of positive rights. It's for examples the right for education, the right for work. but what does it mean? Each positive right for someone entail an obligation for another one. And then people are obligated to employ people who haven't job. In a communist society each of the comrades had job. Note that property right and free enterprise appears at the 16 th and 17 th rank of 44 fundamentals rights.
-----We think it explains the desire to create something like a kind of big European state that will have the task to complete and achieve these positive rights. Also mechanisms of Brussels 's parliament favourites the rent seeking process at the expense of free market process. Lobbies in Brussels parliament are searching for subsidies (e.g. the common agriculture policy). From the idea of Europe as a free market we arrive to the idea of Europe as protection seeking. The rent seeking process blocks the economic process of development, act against the entrepreneurship. Remember Bastiat's wrote "that we see and that we don't see".
-----If we let politics build Europe we're going in the wall. The problem is that European institutions are more and more far than people then people had less and less information. Politics, by a vicious rhetoric, use this uncertainty and the fear about free trade to get powerful. It implies the growth of nationalist and socialist political party. This is the way in France but also in Netherlands and Germany . As Hayek showed in 'The Road to Serfdom' (1944), totalitarism increase with the fear and the decrease of economic freedom. And legislation acts against liberty.
-----We think that the ideas of liberty must be promoted by the civil society. If we don't want a super European state and preserve and promote our liberty, people must act and work for that. Today, the problem in Europe compared to United State , is that we haven't think tanks while liberty needs things like that to flourish and constituted a counter power. As Alexis de Tocqueville sais "Rien n'est plus fertile en prodiges que l'art de vivre libre; mais rien n'est plus ardu que l'apprentissage de la liberté...'.
